This is a paper presented to a group of “Evangelical Scholars in Christian Spirituality” in 2007. In this document, I was turning from my attention to The Brazos Introduction to Christian Spirituality and beginning to think of working on Christian monasticism for today. It was also near the time I was writing my contributions on “Evangelical Spirituality” for Zondervan’s Four Views of Christian Spirituality. Though written as a draft offered to a few colleagues for discussion, it provides a glimpse of how I saw the field within the viewpoint of “evangelicalism” as I began my studies of religious life.
